By Charles Morgan and Hubert Walker for CoinWeek Notes …..
Manufacturing of the brand new Twenty-Cent Piece denomination commenced at a hanging ceremony held on the Carson Metropolis Mint on June 1, 1875. Current was Nevada Senator John Percival Jones (R), who agitated for the passing of the laws that added the “double dime” to an already crowded roster of subsidiary cash. Jones felt {that a} 20-cent coin would higher serve the western states, as minor cash just like the nickel and cent weren’t produced at any department mints.
Within the coin’s first month of manufacturing at Carson Metropolis, outgoing coiner W. Hy Doana struck 3,290 items. His alternative, Levi Dague, struck the remaining 130,000. In whole, 5 die marriages had been deployed.
Although the brand new denomination was the Nevada senator’s concept, the neighboring San Francisco Mint reached a wider service space and struck the vast majority of Twenty-Cent Items in 1875, with Carson Metropolis a distant second and the Philadelphia Mint trailing far behind.
